โ€œI push people away when I start to careโ€

The short answer

Pulling away exactly when something starts working is avoidant regulation: closeness, not conflict, is the trigger. That is why the withdrawal so often follows a good week rather than a bad one, and why it reads as arbitrary to the other person. It is not a decision about them; it is a nervous system managing exposure.

The trigger is closeness, not problems

This is the part that surprises people. Look at the last three times you withdrew and what happened in the 48 hours before, most people find a good conversation, a plan being made, something said out loud. Closeness raises exposure, exposure raises the need for distance, and the distance arrives without ever presenting itself as a response to anything.

Why it looks like losing interest

From inside it presents as doubt: suddenly noticing irritating things, feeling uncertain, finding reasons. Those reasons are generated after the withdrawal, not before it, the mind supplies an explanation for a state the body has already entered. Acting on them is how people end relationships they wanted.

What works better than forcing yourself to stay

Announcing a return point rather than disappearing. 'I go quiet sometimes, it is not about you, I'll be back by Sunday' converts an alarming absence into a known one, which is tolerable for the other person and takes most of the pressure off you. The strategy exists to relieve pressure; a horizon does that without requiring you to override it.

When it is not what you think

Sometimes the doubt is real and the relationship is genuinely wrong, and avoidant patterns get over-applied as a reason to ignore your own judgement. The distinguishing feature is timing: doubt that consistently arrives after closeness and never after conflict is the pattern. Doubt that has been present the whole way through is information.

What to do about it

  1. 1Track the 48 hours before the last three withdrawals. If closeness precedes them, you have your answer and it is not about the people.
  2. 2Name a return point instead of vanishing. "I need a few days, I'll message Sunday", and then actually message on Sunday.
  3. 3Do not make decisions during the withdrawal. The reasons available to you in that window are generated by the state, not by the situation.

Avoidance is scored separately from anxiety, because a great many people run both and the combination behaves differently from either one alone.

Common questions

Is this fear of commitment?

That phrase describes the outcome rather than the mechanism, which is why it is not very useful. What is happening is closer to regulation: closeness raises arousal, distance lowers it. Knowing the trigger gives you something to work with; a label does not.

Can I change this?

The behaviour, yes, and reasonably quickly, naming a return point is a change you can make this week. The underlying reflex shifts slowly and mostly through repeated experience of closeness that did not cost anything.
