โI'm always the one texting firstโ
The short answer
Being the one who always initiates means the friendship is being maintained by one person, which is worth knowing but is not automatically a verdict on how much they value you. Some people genuinely never initiate with anyone and are delighted every time you do. The distinguishing question is not who texts first; it is what happens when you stop.
Why the imbalance persists
The person doing the initiating keeps the friendship from visibly failing, which removes the only signal that would prompt the other person to step up. You are, in effect, funding the evidence that nothing is wrong. Nothing about this requires anyone to be thoughtless, the system simply has no feedback in it.
The two kinds of non-initiator
One is delighted to hear from you, responsive, warm, present when you arrive; they are just not someone who starts things, with anyone, ever. The other is lukewarm on arrival and the friendship only exists because you keep it alive. Those feel identical from the initiating side and are completely different, and only the stopping test separates them.
What the test actually tells you
Stop for a month and one of three things happens. They get in touch; you were wrong about the friendship. They do not, but they are thrilled when you eventually do; they are a non-initiator and the friendship is real. Nothing happens and nothing ever does; you have your answer, and it cost you a month rather than another five years.
When it is not what you think
Plenty of good people never initiate anything. ADHD, depression, chronic overwhelm and simple temperament all produce it, and none of them mean the friendship is one-sided in any way that matters. A person can value you enormously and still never be the one who texts first.
What to do about it
- 1Stop initiating with one specific person for a month. Not a punishment, not announced, an experiment with a real result.
- 2When you do next make contact, notice the first thirty seconds of their response. Warmth on arrival is the thing to watch, not who made the arrival happen.
- 3Sort your circle into 'keep as is', 'keep at a different frequency', and 'let fade'. Most names belong in the middle column, which is the useful finding.

Common questions
Isn't this petty scorekeeping?
Counting every message would be. Noticing that you have maintained a friendship single-handedly for three years is not; it is noticing where your time goes, which you are entitled to do.
What if they're just busy?
Busy is real and it is also the most available explanation, which is why it survives so long. Busy people who value you typically surface eventually, unprompted. If a year passes with no unprompted contact, busy is not the variable.
