The spiral in your body
The alarm is not just in your head. It is in your chest and stomach and hands, and sometimes the fastest way to quieten it is through the body, not through reasoning.
Why you cannot think your way out mid-spiral
Once the alarm is fully going, the parts of your brain that plan and reason get less say. That is why telling yourself "it's fine" in the middle of a spiral rarely works. You have to bring the body down first.
Cold water on your face, a long out-breath, or a few minutes of hard movement all tell your nervous system that there is no emergency, faster than any argument can.
DBT includes a set of fast body-based skills for moments of intense distress. Cold water on the face triggers the dive reflex, which slows the heart rate within seconds. It is not a cure, just a way of getting enough calm back to think.
